For years, we have been fighting back against the anti-government crusade whose aim is to make the wealthiest individuals even more wealthy – at our expense. Our efforts have gone beyond the grass roots, down to bedrock, to our fundamental beliefs about society, about fairness, and about progress, and our efforts have paid off.
In 2014, Northern Grafton County avoided the Republican wave that swept so much of the state and the rest of the country. We re-elected our North Country Democratic members in the State House and Grafton County, and helped re-elect our Democratic Governor, US Senator, and US Congresswoman.
In 2016, we helped elect US Senator Maggie Hassan, return State Senator Jeff Woodburn and State Representative Linda Massimilla to the State House, and re-elect Linda Lauer as a County Commissioner in Grafton County.
Bedrock financial support is critical for our local candidates, especially for new candidates who need to start from scratch in purchasing signs, preparing palm cards, and mailing campaign literature to their constituents. Bedrock contributions also allow NGCD to promote local awareness of key political issues by organizing meetings and special events that are open to the public free of charge.
This year we have held a series of meetings and events to promote action at the state and federal levels on progressive issues:
- Jan 2017 Gathering: Identified issues for action, shared information about contacting elected officials, NHDP Grassroots Coordinator, Sue Ford, shared what was happening throughout the state. (over 85 attendees)
- February 2017 Follow-up: Formed Issue Groups on Healthcare, Education, Environment, Immigration, Civil Rights, Voting Rights and the Economy – members began sharing information on their particular issues, attending hearings on pending NH legislation, participating in protests, writing letters to the editors, and calling and emailing elected officials about issues of concern.
- March and June 2017 meetings: Issue Groups continued sharing information and taking action.
Bedrock contributions enable our candidates to spend their time campaigning rather than fund-raising. Bedrock contributions strengthen our local organization and our effectiveness in coordinating with state-wide and national campaigns.
